36 Records. 27 Nations. Five Days That Redrew The Record Books.

China's junior swimmers topped the medal table with 65 medals as 36 meet records fell across five days in Bangkok — headlined by Xinyang Zhou's clean sweep of the butterfly events, Ruoxi Yang's backstroke sweep, and Japan's Kouki Fujiwara leaving with a meet-high seven golds.

The 12th Asian Age Group Championships closed at Bangkok's SAT Swimming Pool with 36 meet records broken, 27 nations on the medal table, and a new generation of Asian swimming stars announcing themselves -- most of them not yet old enough to drive.

Held at the Rajamangala National Stadium's SAT Swimming Pool from 17-21 July, the meet drew age-group swimmers from across Asia and the Gulf, racing in three age categories -- 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 -- plus a 5-day slate of individual and relay events. By the time the final session closed on Day 5, the record books had been rewritten more than three dozen times.

China's Swimming Association topped the standings by a wide margin, its junior squad combining for 35 golds and 65 total medals -- headlined by a trio of teenagers who each broke three individual meet records apiece. Hong Kong China and Thailand's host contingent tied for second place on total medals with 47 each, while Chinese Taipei, Japan and Vietnam rounded out the top six.

The Team Medal Table

China Swimming Association -- 1st, 65 medals

China Swimming Association's 65 total medals were more than the next two nations combined. But the real story is deeper down the table -- 22 of the 27 competing nations left Bangkok with at least one medal, and five countries (Hong Kong, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, India and Singapore) collected more silver and bronze than gold, a sign of just how deep the competition ran this year.

The Multi-Medalists, By Age Group

Xinyang Zhou
Xinyang Zhou, CHN -- swept all three butterfly events

No swimmer dominated Bangkok quite like China's junior contingent. In the Girls 15-16 group, Xinyang Zhou swept all three butterfly events for five individual golds without dropping a single race, while training partner Ruoxi Yang completed her own sweep of every backstroke event. Among the boys, 14-year-old Kouki Fujiwara of Japan left with seven golds -- the single highest tally of any swimmer at the meet, across any age group.

36 meet records fell across the five days

By the close of the meet, 36 individual and relay meet records had fallen -- 11 in the men's/boys' program, 22 in the women's/girls', and 3 in mixed relay events. China's Ruoxi Yang, Xinyang Zhou, Qianhe Hu and Mohan Chang combined to break ten of those records between them, while Japan's Kouki Fujiwara and Koyori Sasaki, and Vietnam's and Hong Kong's mixed relay squads, all left their names in the book too.
