Yuan Yi Chong Leads Selangor Into 400m Freestyle Final
Yuan Yi Chong goes in as top seed tonight in the Women's 400m Freestyle final — but with five swimmers separated by less than five seconds, the gold is wide open.
The Favourite and the Pack
The Women's 400m Freestyle final has all the ingredients for a proper race tonight: one clear favourite, a pack of challengers within striking distance, and eight swimmers who all qualified inside five seconds of each other.
Yuan Yi Chong of Selangor drew lane 4 with a prelims time of 4:39.90 — over three seconds clear of the field heading into finals. At 17 years old, she is the athlete to beat.
But the pack is close. Rui Nee Tan of Pulau Pinang qualified second at 4:42.86, with Kelly Yao Teo of Sarawak a whisker behind at 4:43.72. In the lanes either side of Chong, both swimmers represent real podium threats.
Further out, Xin Ying Chu (Sabah), Yun Xuan Yeoh (Pulau Pinang), and Lynna Yi Jing Yeow (Melaka) round out a competitive middle of the field. In a 400m race, starting position matters less than a sprint — every lane can happen.
The meet record stands at 4:18.94, set by Khoo Cai Lin in 2008. That's well out of reach tonight, but the top seeds will be chasing personal bests in front of a home crowd.
