She's Back

Most athletes would take a day off after breaking a meet record. Shannon Yan-Qing Tan broke hers twice in the same day — and she's back in the pool tonight.

Less than 24 hours after swimming 2:15.13 to shatter the Women's 200m Butterfly meet record, the 16-year-old Selangor swimmer lines up as top seed in tonight's Women's 100m Butterfly final. Her prelims time of 1:04.27 puts her fastest in the field, with teammate Yue Lynn Khor in lane 5 at 1:04.82.

The meet record is 1:01.82, held by Marellyn Liew — and the national record (1:01.04, also Liew) is another level again. Shannon isn't expected to threaten those marks tonight, but in swimming, nobody expected what happened yesterday either.

Nadia Lim of Perak (1:05.04) and Yuet Ting Aw of Pulau Pinang (1:05.45) will be fighting for bronze. Kayleigh Zhi Xuan Ang of Sarawak at 1:05.39 adds another challenger to a competitive bottom half.

All eyes will be on lane 4. Again.
