Sophocles Xinxian Ng — 2:21.48. Anson Wei Kiet Chiu — 2:24.68. That's 3.2 seconds separating lane 4 from lane 8 in tonight's Men's 200m Breaststroke final. In a two-minute race, that gap is smaller than it sounds.
Ng, 18, of Johor, is the top seed and drew the prized centre lane. But Yu Xiang Cham of Wilayah Persekutuan at 2:22.04 is a legitimate threat, and Khai Hern Wan of Pulau Pinang (2:23.92) and Zun Jet Teo of WP (2:23.96) complete what looks like a four-horse race for gold.
The meet record (2:16.40, Zheng Yen Andrew Goh, Selangor) is not in the field tonight — so it should stand. But the national record (2:15.62, Elvin Chia, 1999) is the longer horizon every breaststroker in Malaysia has on their mind.
At 14, Ethan Kheng Hong Tan of Sarawak (2:24.18) is the youngest finalist — and one worth watching across future editions of this meet.
