Records under threat as SUKMA XXII swimming opens in the 200 free
Nadia Lim carries the meet record into Day 1 with the field's fastest seed by a tenth.
SUKMA XXII opens its swimming programme on 19 August with the women's 200 freestyle, and the seeding sheet alone tells you records are live from the first heat of the meet.
Nadia Lim leads the field into Day 1 on a seed of 2:04.64 — a time that equals Heidi Gan's meet record, set back in 2008, on the button. She holds the fastest entry by a tenth of a second over Selangor's Yuan Yi Chong (2:08.28), with Wilayah Persekutuan's Qin Lynn Chiew and Sarawak's Kelly Yao Teo rounding out a tightly packed chase pack in the low 2:10s. Khoo Cai Lin's 2:03.22 national record, standing since 2013, is the other number the whole final session will be measured against.
The men's race carries the same weight. Welson Sim's 1:47.36 national record from 2017 remains untouched at this level, but the meet record is the more realistic target: Muhammad Dhuha Bin Zulflikry swam 1:50.03 to set it just last year, and he returns as top seed at 1:53.04 this time out — close enough that a well-paced final could see it fall again on home water.
With three heats needed to get through the men's field and two for the women, Wednesday morning's prelims will already separate contenders from pretenders before the touchpads light up for finals at 5:00 PM. Selangor Aquatics hosting its first SUKMA in over a decade adds an extra layer to a Day 1 session that was never going to be short on storylines.
