Shannon Tan Breaks Her Own Meet Record — Twice
Shannon Yan-Qing Tan swam the Women's 200m Butterfly twice on Day 3 and broke the SUKMA XXII meet record both times, finishing with 2:15.13 in finals.
She Wasn't Done After Prelims
Most swimmers aim to break a meet record once. Shannon Yan-Qing Tan did it twice in the same day.
The 16-year-old Selangor swimmer entered Day 3 finals of the Women's 200m Butterfly already holding the new SUKMA XXII meet record — 2:15.77, set just hours earlier in the morning heats. Then she went and broke it again.
Her finals time: 2:15.13. A new meet record. Again.
What the Numbers Mean
To put that in context, the previous SUKMA meet record before this morning was older than most of Shannon's competition. She didn't just chip away at it — she replaced it, then replaced herself.
The national record (2:14.30, held by Khoo Chai Lin since 2009) still stands. But Shannon is 16. She has time. A lot of it.
The Race
Shannon led from the first stroke and never looked like giving it up. Her Selangor teammate Yue Lynn Khor finished second in 2:18.19 — a full three seconds back. Yen Ern Lee of Pulau Pinang took bronze in 2:24.68.
It wasn't close. This was Shannon's race from the moment she hit the water.
